NEW DELHI, January 26 (Sputnik) — Twelve people have died in a rail accident in Northern India, local police said Monday.
The accident occurred when a small van drove through an unmanned railway crossing in Barwal town, and was hit by an oncoming train.
The driver of the vehicle was among those killed. Three more people were injured and taken to a hospital, local media reported.
Low visibility due to foggy weather is said to be a contributing factor in the accident.
India has one of the largest railway networks in the world with the total length of 65,000 kilometers (over 40,000 miles). The country's railway network serves over 20 million passengers a day.
