Kosovo Police Arrest Serb Intent on Committing Terrorist Attack
MOSCOW, January 27 (Sputnik) — Kosovo Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse a rally calling for a minister's resignation in Pristina, according to Klan Kosova television channel reports Tuesday.

Some 2,000 protesters gathered in Kosovo's capital Pristina demanding the dismissal of a Serb minister accused of insulting Albanian war victims.

Aleksandar Jablanovic, one of three Serb ministers in the Kosovar government, called a group of Albanians "savages" earlier in January. The group blocked Serbian pilgrims from entering an Orthodox Christian church in the town of Djakovica.

The European Union welcomes the formation of a new Kosovo government and hopes it will resume the partially recognized country’s path toward European integration, the EU’s foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and neighborhood policy commissioner Johannes Hahn said in a joint statement Tuesday. - Sputnik International

Dozens of activists have been arrested and many protesters were injured as a result of the Kosovo police using force, according to local media reports.

Tuesday's rally followed intense protests against Jablanovic that have been taking place in Kosovo since January 16. The protesters demand the resignation of the minister for Returns and Communities and his entire cabinet.

Rallies are also calling for a governmental vote to take control of the richest mine in the country, Trepca. The mine, rich in lead, zinc and silver is also claimed by Serbia, which does not recognize Kosovo's independence. The Kosovo government promised to take over the mine at the beginning of January but backed down after Serbia's threat to cease EU-mediated talks between the two countries.

The unrest is the largest since Kosovo became independent in 2008.
