MOSCOW, January 27 (Sputnik) — The Russian communications and media watchdog Roskomnadzor and representatives from CNN International have expressed an interest in resuming CNN broadcasting in Russia, the press release on the Roskomnadzor's website said Tuesday.
"The parties expressed mutual interest in the resumption of broadcast of CNN International in Russia and discussed the legal opportunity for this. They also discussed current issues of licensing of broadcasting in the Russian Federation of other television channels of Turner Broadcasting company," the Roskomnadzor's press release read.
CNN halted cable and satellite broadcasts in Russia on December 31, 2014, due to recent changes in Russian mass media legislation. Nevertheless, the 24-hour cable news channel said in its statement at the time that it still hoped to return to the Russian media market one day.
The Cable News Network (CNN) was launched in June 1980 by American media proprietor Ted Turner. The channel opened its Russian division in 1983. Currently, CNN news reaches over 200 million households across 212 countries and territories.
