Spy Scandal Keeps Russian, US Diplomats at Negotiation Table for Second Day
11:11 GMT 28.01.2015 (Updated: 10:01 GMT 06.08.2022) US Ambassador to Russia and Russian Foreign Ministry's official Ryabkov had a second meeting in two days amid since the start of a spy scandal.
27 January 2015, 20:44 GMT
MOSCOW, January 28 (Sputnik) — Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov and US Ambassador to Russia John Tefft discussed on Wednesday the bilateral relationship between Moscow and Washington following the arrest of a Russian national in the United States over a conspiracy to act as an unregistered agent of a foreign government, Russia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
"The discussion of several issues of the bilateral agenda was continued," the statement said.
This is the second meeting between the two diplomats in two days since Monday's arrest of Evgeny Buryakov, accused over a conspiracy to act as an unregistered agent of a foreign government.
Earlier this week, New York federal prosecutors charged Buryakov with acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government. Buryakov was arrested the same day, and appeared before a US magistrate judge in a Manhattan federal court.
The case's next hearing is scheduled for early February. The Russian citizen is facing up to 15 years in prison. Buryakov said he would not plead guilty.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said Tuesday that the United States had not provided any evidence to support the charges.
