GENEVA (Sputnik) — The current Ebola outbreak has already claimed lives of over 9,000 people in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Friday, in its most recent situation summary.
According to WHO statistics, the deadly Ebola virus disease has killed 9,004 people in the three most affected West African countries. The number of confirmed cases has reached 22,525.
Updated data reveals that the highest number of deaths in the current Ebola outbreak, 3,746, have been registered in Liberia, while Sierra Leone has the highest number of confirmed, probable or suspected cases at 10,792.
The Ebola epidemic currently sweeping several countries in Western Africa broke out in Guinea in December 2013, and quickly spread to neighboring states. Cases have also been documented in the United States and Europe.
