The suspected shooter, identified as Craig Stephen Hicks, 46, reportedly turned himself in and is now being held on charges of killing 23-year-old Deah Shaddy Barakat, his wife Yusor Mohammad, 21, and her sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19.
The victims, North Carolina University students all, were shot dead in their home in the town of Chapel Hill.
Hicks described himself as an atheist on Facebook and posted regular images and text condemning all religions.
