The prototype for the highly durable flexible screen was developed by the scientists at the Russian Central Research Institute of Precision Machine Building (TsNIITochMash) for use in next generation military technology, according to their press release.
In an interview to a Russian radio station Echo Moscow Dmitry Semizorov, the director of the institute said “We already have the first prototypes of the flexible displays. It continues working even after being pierced with a bullet; it just keeps functioning in the same mode as before, just with a hole in it.”
Currently, the display only supports a black and white mode. However, the creators plan to add color to future versions. Unfortunately it is unlikely to see any use in consumer electronics.
A similar solution was presented by LG in January, 2015, that had a full color P-OLED display and was ready for mass production; however, their display was not as resilient as the Russian creation.
