UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – Moscow proposes enforcing the UN Declaration on international law of 1970 with an emphasis on the inadmissibility of supporting the unconstitutional transition of state power, head of Russian Foreign Ministry Sergei Lavrov said Monday.
"Everyone has to accept that people have the right to pick their future independently without outside interference into their internal affairs. In this regard, I suggest considering reaffirming and strengthening of the relevant provisions contained in the Declaration on Principles of International Law concerning Friendly Relations and Co-operation among States in accordance with the Charter of the UN adopted in 1970, with a particular emphasis on the inadmissibility of support of unconstitutional change of state power," Lavrov said during an open debate at the UN Security Council.
In November 2013, a political crisis erupted in Ukraine when the country's authorities announced a halt to its European integration process. Major protests began in Kiev's central square and soon spread across the country. The demonstrations led to a government coup February 2014, forcing then-President Viktor Yanukovych to flee the country.
