WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) partnered with the Chicago Police Department (CPD) to run part of an undercover anti-narcotics investigation out of the reported Homan Square “black site” in Chicago, a source familiar with the case told Sputnik.
“Look into ‘Operation Impunity,’ it’s a classic example of how Homan Square operates. It was between the FBI and a CPD undercover anti-drug task force,” the source said on Thursday.
Operation Impunity was a joint FBI-CPD investigation from 2004 to 2006 in which officers posed undercover as “dirty cops” to apprehend gang members in the act of peddling narcotics, US District Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald said in a 2006 press release.
Homan Square is a warehouse in Chicago that the CPD has reportedly used as a secret interrogation compound, similar to a US Central Intelligence Agency black site. Police practices at the site allegedly include beatings, prolonged shackling and denying detainees legal counsel.
On Thursday, Amnesty International demanded that Chicago pay reparations for the torture of more than 100 Chicago residents of color by police between 1972 and 1991.
On Wednesday, CPD told Sputnik that they abide by all rules, laws, and regulations pertaining to proper treatment of accused individuals.
