BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — The fact that EU combat groups have not been used since their creation in 2007 is regrettable, US ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power said Monday in Brussels at a discussion of Europe's role in UN peacekeeping.
Since 2007, the EU combat groups have comprised between 1,500 and 2,000 troops, with a significant amount of money being spent on their maintenance, Power added.
EU combat groups can be formed by European Union members with the participation of partner states. The groups were created in order to take part in resolving crisis situations but have not been used in any armed conflicts yet.
