“He would be considered a terrorist in Spain, no doubt,” Torres said.
Torres was responding to Lopez’ interview with El Pais, which he said was “shameful and despicable.”
In the interview, Lopez claimed that opposition figures are still persecuted in Venezuela. He was referring the mayor of Caracas, Antonio Ledezma, being indicted in February for a plot against Venezuela’s government.
Torres’ letter to the Spanish government says that Madrid must not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries, adding that the petition could lead to conflict with its ally.
Lopez, the National Coordinator of the Venezuelan political party Voluntad Popular, is now being held at Ramo Verde military prison outside Caracas. He is accused of “arson of a public building,” “damages to public property,” “incitement to commit a crime,” and “associating for organized crime.”
