MOSCOW (Sputnik), Daria Chernyshova — The European Central Bank (ECB) is undemocratic and responsible for austerity policies in Europe, a German lawmaker from Die Linke party, who is currently in the midst of anti-ECB protests in Frankfurt told Sputnik Wednesday.
"ECB [is] a very undemocratic Central Bank, it is responsible for austerity policy in Greece and that is the reason why people are protesting," Andrej Hunko told Sputnik.
He added that the ECB is part of "the troika which is squeezing Greece at the moment and imposing austerity regime all over Europe."
Earlier on Wednesday, several thousands of people gathered in Frankfurt to protest against EU austerity policies. The protesters tried to disrupt the opening of the new $1 billion ECB office headquarters in the city. The ECB spokesman told Sputnik that the demonstration will not affect the opening.
Greece has borrowed a total of 240 billion euros ($265 billion) under two aid packages from the European Union, the European Central Bank (ECB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the so-called troika of international creditors, in exchange for austerity measures involving sharp cuts in public spending.
