Frankfurt Police Ready for Any Development of Anti-Austerity Protests
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The number of people taking part in Frankfurt protests against the Eurozone's austerity policies could reach up to 20,000 later on Wednesday, a member of the Greek ruling SYRIZA political party and one of the organizers of today's protest told Sputnik.

On Wednesday morning, the members of Blockupy, a left-wing political group protesting EU austerity policies, particularly those imposed on Greece, gathered in Frankfurt to disrupt the opening of the new $1.4 billion headquarters of the European Central Bank. Blockupy has called for more rallies to be held at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. local time (13:00 and 16:00 GMT respectively).

"There is no precise picture for the number of people in the morning, but by the time of the central demonstration more than 10 thousand people are expected… It could go up to 15-20 thousand," Fotopoulos said, confirming an earlier statement by Corinna Genschel, from the Blockupy organization committee.

According to Christoph Kleine, the spokesman for the Blockupy protest movement, some 6,000 people took to the streets of Frankfurt on Wednesday morning to protest against austerity measures.

Kleine, speaking at a press conference, referred to the protest as "European" and stated that half of the demonstrators came to Frankfurt from abroad.
