MOSCOW (Sputnik) — US Embassy in Russia is verifying reports on possible arrest of a US diplomat on suspicion of drunk driving in Moscow Region, a US Embassy spokesman said Sunday.
"We cannot confirm the report yet. We are looking into this [report]. Our policy is to encourage our diplomats to follow local laws," Will Stevens told RIA Novosti.
According to the source, the police found out that the diplomat, identified as an aide to US Defense Attache Bruce McClintock, had no OSAGO mandatory insurance.
Moreover, police officers smelled alcohol on the man's breath during the inspection of his documents. According to the protocol, the aide to US Defense Attache Bruce McClintock refused to undergo the alcohol testing, the source said.
His car was reportedly driven away by his wife, who was in the vehicle at the time of the arrest.
Correction: this article incorrectly identified defense attache McClintock as the man who was detained by police, and was updated to say the detained man was in fact his aide. We present our apologies to US Defense Attache Bruce McClintock and to our readers.
