MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A spokesperson for the Anonymous hackers said the group knew nothing about Sunday attack at the NYPD Captains Endowment Association website; claimed such attack was "expected" because NYPD "target" and "abuse" people it is meant to protect, US tech news outlet Techworm reported.
Earlier on Sunday, New York Post said citing a NYPD official that the captains union website was brought down by a cyber attack and injected with malware. Union's President Roy Richter said there were indications that the attack was orchestrated by the Anonymous group. Richter said no official information has been compromised and the NYPD see the incident as an irritation rather than a threat.
New York police received much criticism for brutality and racial profiling after the July, 2014 death of African American Eric Garner. Garner died in a chokehold administered by an NYPD white police officer.
The international "hacktivist" network known as Anonymous is known primarily for cyber attacks on government, corporate and religious websites.
Earlier in March Anonymous hackers told Sputnik that the group has recently taken down more than 1,000 Twitter accounts and websites belonging to the Islamic State (ISIL) terrorist group supporters.
