Saudi Airstrikes in Yemen Contrary to Int'l Law, Violate Sovereignty - Iran
09:15 GMT 26.03.2015 (Updated: 09:25 GMT 26.03.2015) Iran's Foreign Ministry condemned on Thursday airstrikes currently being conducted by Saudi Arabia in Yemen against Houthi militants, calling these actions contrary to international law.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Iranian Foreign Ministry demanded an immediate suspension of all military actions in Yemen.
On Wednesday, Saudi Arabia and a number of other Arab nations launched a military operation against the Houthis in Yemen following a request for support from beleaguered Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.
"We condemn the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) airstrikes on Yemen. Saudi Arabia's actions are contrary to international law and violate the state's sovereignty," the ministry said in a statement.
According to the ministry, "military actions against Yemen will further aggravate the situation and intensify the crisis, reducing the chances for a peaceful settlement of the internal conflict."
Members of the Houthi tribe have taken control of large areas in Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, forcing President Hadi and the country's government to resign in January. Hadi disavowed his resignation in February and, after escaping house arrest, fled to Aden.
