According to Mogherini, extremist groups may take advantage of the situation if a consensus is not reached through negotiations.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – The crisis in Yemen cannot be solved militarily as the situation in the country has significantly deteriorated following the advance of Houthi rebel forces and Saudi-led airstrikes, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said Thursday.

"The latest events in Yemen have dramatically worsened the already fragile situation in the country and risk having serious regional consequences… I'm convinced that military action is not a solution," Mogherini said in a statement.

On Wednesday, Yemeni Houthi rebels started conducting airstrikes against the residence of the ousted president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi in the city of Aden. Following the attacks, a Saudi-led coalition started carrying out airstrikes against the militants' positions in the capital Sanaa.

Bahrain, Qatar and Egypt, among others, are participating in the Saudi-led coalition. The campaign is a response to a request from Hadi, currently said to be hiding abroad.

The coalition's airstrikes triggered a wave of protests in Sanaa, with thousands of people taking to the streets of the Yemeni capital.

The Houthi militants forced President Hadi and his government to resign in late January. The group then dissolved the country's parliament and declared the formation of a presidential council. Hadi disavowed his resignation in February, leaving his house-arrest in Sanaa to flee to Aden.
