The journalists' safety must be regulated by thoroughly elaborated legal basis, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Chairperson-in-Office Ivica Dacic said Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Protection of journalists in the OSCE region remains on the top of the organization's agenda, as violence against professionals, working in this sphere, is steadily increasing, according to the chairman.

"We must discuss ways to improve the current legislative framework concerning the protection of journalists," Dacic said at the opening of the OSCE conference on the Protection of safety and integrity of journalists in the OSCE region.

The present level of safety and integrity of journalists will be discussed during the two-day conference. Almost 200 governments, media, legislators, academia officials as well as NGOs from the OSCE participating countries will elaborate the recommendations for governments on the improvement of the situation in the OSCE region.

The conference is organized by Serbia's OSCE Chairmanship together with the Ministry of Culture and Information of the country, as well as with the Office of OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media.
