SHARM EL-SHEIKH (Sputnik) — UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon expressed hope on Saturday that the Arab League summit participants would set guidelines to stop the Yemeni crisis.
"It is my fervent hope that at this Arab League Summit, leaders will lay down clear guidelines to peacefully resolve the crisis in Yemen," Ban Ki-moon said at the Arab League summit in Sharm El-Sheikh.
Ban Ki-moon added also that peaceful talks with participation of UN Special Advisor on Yemen, Jamal Benomar, remain the only chance to prevent long-term conflict in the country.
“Negotiations facilitated by my Special Envoy Jamal Benomar, as endorsed by the Security Council, remain the only chance to prevent a long drawn out conflict,” Ban Ki-Moon said.
Yemen is currently suffering from political unrest and clashes between government forces and the Houthi rebels.
On Wednesday, Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi asked the Arab League for military aid and later in the day the Saudi Arabia-led coalition began conducting airstrikes on Houthi positions in Yemen.
