Authorities of Mexico's Guerrero state report that five people were injured during clashes between students and police.

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – Five people were injured during clashes between students and police in Mexico's Guerrero state, local authorities report.

According to police, the students allegedly hijacked a gas tanker and burnt a police and ambulance cars before they were stopped by authorities in the city of Chilpancingo. The students resisted arrest using rocks and sticks. As a result, three students and two officers were injured.

The students were all from Ayotzinapa, the same town where the 43 students who went missing in September, 2014, studied.

The students were abducted on September 26, after they participated in a protest against discriminatory hiring and funding practices in the city of Iguala, located in Guerrero state. They were reportedly shot or choked to death, their bodies burnt and the ashes thrown into a nearby river.

The Mexican government blamed the abduction on local drug cartels, but the victims' families and local teacher unions have pointed out that the government was too quick to shift the blame on criminal gangs.

Protests have been ongoing in Mexico since the disappearance of the students, with participants blaming local authorities for the kidnapping.

In November, 2014, Mexican prosecutors arrested the former mayor of Iguala and his wife. The mayor was charged with complicity in the students' disappearance the month before.
