Japan, US Defense Chiefs to Meet Amid Tension Over US Military Base
12:05 GMT 02.04.2015 (Updated: 13:30 GMT 06.08.2022) Japanese and US defense chiefs will meet in Tokyo next week amid growing local opposition to the construction of a new US military base.
Japanese and US defense chiefs will meet in Tokyo next week amid growing local opposition to the construction of a new US military base on the southern island of Okinawa.
Defense Minister Gen Nakatani and US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter agreed to hold talks in Tokyo next week. Their meetings are likely to include the proposed US military base on Okinawa and bilateral defense cooperation.
Tensions are high between Tokyo and the local government in Okinawa over a plan to build a new US military base in the northern part of the island.
