WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States and Operation Inherent Resolve Coalition military forces continued their onslaught against the Islamic State by launching seven airstrikes in Syria and Iraq, the US Department of Defense reported in a statement.
“Fighter and bomber aircraft conducted three airstrikes…. In Syria,” the Defense Department said on Thursday. “Attack and fighter aircraft conducted four airstrikes in Iraq.”
Airstrikes in Syria destroyed two ISIL tactical units and three fighting positions near Kobani, according to the Defense Department.
The airstrikes were a part of Operation Inherent Resolve, whose aim is to eliminate ISIL militants and the threat they pose to Iraq, Syria, the Middle East, and the rest of the world.
The US-led coalition began carrying out airstrikes against ISIL targets in Iraq in August 2014, and expanded the air campaign to Syria in September 2014, although without Syrian government approval.
