SANAA (Sputnik) — At least nine people were killed and over 20 sustained injuries in an airstrike carried out by the Saudi Arabia-led coalition near the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Friday, a local source told Sputnik.
The airstrike, which struck a village east of Sanaa, led to massive destruction of infrastructure, according to the source. Locals are currently trying to help the wounded out of the rubble of collapsed buildings.
The number of victims is expected to increase substantially, as there is an acute shortage of ambulances in the region, the source said.
Saudi Arabia, alongside several other Arab states, including Egypt, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, began carrying out airstrikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen last week.
The Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah, is a Zaidi Shia insurgent group which has seized parts of Yemen, including the capital.
