WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Term limits should be imposed on US Representatives and Senators in order to end abuse in the US Congress, Republican Presidential Candidate Rand Paul said during his announcement he will join the 2016 US presidential race on Tuesday.

“We limited the President to two terms, and we need to limit the terms for Congress,” Paul said on Tuesday. “I want to reform Washington with common sense rules that will break the log jam in Congress.”

Paul said there is no monopoly on common sense in Washington, and he ran for office to bring back common sense.

“Our great nation was founded upon the extraordinary notion that government should be restrained and freedom be maximized,” Paul said. “America to me is that beacon, and we are unique among other nations.”

Paul concluded the United States is a beacon on the basis of its successes in the past such as in the fight against Nazism and Fascism during World War II, and against Communism during the Cold War.

Rand Paul represents the US state of Kentucky in the Congress. He was elected on January 5, 2011 for his first term in office.
