A series of protests has taken place around Europe on Saturday, with people speaking against the US-EU free trade agreement, titled the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).

MOSCOW (Sputnik), Anastasia Levchenko — The demonstration against a proposed free trade deal between the United States and the European Union held Saturday was very peaceful in the German capital of Berlin, Anne Daenner, spokeswoman for the Mehr Demokratie nongovernmental organization, told Sputnik.

"Very peaceful, very constructive, there were no riots," Daenner said, adding that police were present at the demonstrations but there were no outbursts of violence either from the demonstrators or from the law enforcers.

She said that a chain of people had surrounded the embassies of the United States and Canada, as well as the European Commission's office.

Stop TTIP: Thousands Protest Against US-EU Free Trade Deal Across Europe
The Attac Deutschland movement, that coordinates anti-TTIP protests in Germany, told RIA Novosti earlier in the day that there had been some 4,000 protesters in Berlin, while the police estimated the number of demonstrators to be 600.

The TTIP is currently on the stage of negotiations. The advocates of the deal say it could benefit the economic growth in both regions, while the opponents say it will make it more difficult for Europe to regulate markets.

According to the European Commission's website, the TTIP will help generate jobs and growth in the European Union and cut prices while providing a wider variety of goods. It is also deemed to help Europe influence world trade rules and project its values globally.
