WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US state of California aims to cut greenhouse emissions by 40 percent below the 1990 levels by 2030, California Governor Gerry Brown announced in a statement on Wednesday.
“[Governor Brown] today issued an Executive Order to establish a California greenhouse gas reduction target of 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030 — the most aggressive benchmark enacted by any government in North America to reduce dangerous carbon emissions over the next decade and a half,” the statement read.
California already set a target to reduce greenhouse emissions to 1990 levels by 2020, and a long-term goal of cutting greenhouse emissions by 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050.
California officials have blamed climate change for the drought.
On Wednesday, the American Lung Association issued a report that found several cities in California, such as Los Angeles, have some of the worst air pollution the United States.
