“[Governor Brown] today issued an Executive Order to establish a California greenhouse gas reduction target of 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030 — the most aggressive benchmark enacted by any government in North America to reduce dangerous carbon emissions over the next decade and a half,” the statement read.

California already set a target to reduce greenhouse emissions to 1990 levels by 2020, and a long-term goal of cutting greenhouse emissions by 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050.

The new emissions goal comes as California faces a four-year drought that led the Governor to issue an Executive Order on April 1, 2015 to impose mandatory restrictions to cut water use by 25 percent.

California officials have blamed climate change for the drought.

On Wednesday, the American Lung Association issued a report that found several cities in California, such as Los Angeles, have some of the worst air pollution the United States.
