LONDON (Sputnik), Daria Chernyshova – Scotland will now have an opportunity to play an important role at Westminster after Scottish National Party (SNP) won 56 seats in the UK parliament out of 59 possible, SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon said Friday.
"What we witnessed last night was a historic shift in Scottish politics — we can make our voice heard at Westminster," SNP said on Twitter, quoting Sturgeon.
The party added that the May 7 elections result demonstrated swings in politics never seen before in the history of the United Kingdom.
In the previous British parliament, the SNP had only six seats.
On Thursday, UK citizens took to polling stations across the country to participate in the general election.
Overall, the Conservative Party is currently leading the election with 313 seats secured, ahead of the Labourists with 227 seats, according to the BBC.
