WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Lyashchenko stated the Russian Embassy is in contact with the US State Department and local authorities. The Embassy has also requested information on the victims from Amtrak.
“As of now, we do not have any information about any Russian citizens being among victims of the Philadelphia train crash, and no Russian citizens has contacted us,” Lyashchenko said on Wednesday.
On Tuesday night, Amtrak Northeast Regional Train 188, carrying 238 passengers and five crew members from Washington, DC to New York City derailed and rolled onto its side near Philadelphia.
The US National Transportation Safety Board said at a press briefing the train derailed shortly after the train engineer applied the brakes while going double the speed limit around a curve.
Seven of the 253 passengers are confirmed dead and more than 200 were injured in the accident.
