MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Russian Defense Ministry dismissed Friday Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s claims of alleged Russian military presence in eastern Ukraine, comparing it to the policy of McCarthyism in the United States in 1950s.
“Ukrainian officials of all ranks traditionally intensify their attempts to manipulate alleged information about so-called Russian military presence in Donbas ahead of major international events,” ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said.
He said the situation was “strongly reminiscent of historical flubs of the 50s… when the Americans were frightened hysterically with thousands of ‘undercover Communists,’” he said.
