MOSCOW (Sputnik) – According to La Voix Du Nord, 14 people were injured in a fight that occurred on Sunday afternoon. The incident was sparked by an argument between a Sudanese and an Afghan individuals over a stolen phone, the newspaper reported. As many as 200 people were involved in the fight.
Some 1,000 migrants were present at the Calais center when the incident occurred. The center was evacuated by the police following the fight.
The Jules Ferry camp was opened in January, becoming the first institution in the city to provide shelter for migrants since the closure of the Sangatte refugee camp in 2002.
In recent months, French authorities have been shutting down illegal migration camps in Calais.
In April, a Pas-de-Calais Prefecture spokesman told Sputnik that there were some 1,900 undocumented migrants from Eritrea, Albania, Afghanistan, Sudan, Egypt and Syria living in various camps in Calais.
