“I don’t think there will be any boycotts on the World Cup in Russia. We’ve heard individual statements before, including from politicians and renowned American senators. But I don’t think the sports community will ever do this, won’t let a split in the world of sports happen. This includes the Olympic community and I think it’s the same for spectator sports like football,” Zhukov was quoted on the Olympic Committee’s website as saying.
On Tuesday, Blatter, who has been heading FIFA since 1998, resigned, just four days after he was reelected to a fifth term.
The FIFA chief had not been indicted by the US Justice Department and has not been publicly identified as a target of the ongoing investigation.
Switzerland launched a separate probe into the selection process of Russia and Qatar as host countries for FIFA’s World Cup football tournaments in 2018 and 2022.
The FIFA 2018 World Cup is scheduled from June 14 to July 15, 2018, in 11 Russian cities, including Moscow, Kazan, Sochi and St. Petersburg.
