WASHINGTON (Sputnik), Thomas Zimmer — US Republican presidential nominee Rick Perry will focus on his record of job creation in Texas during his 2016 presidential campaign experts told Sputnik.
“I think he [Perry] will play up the economic position in Texas,” University of Dayton Interim Political Science Department Chairperson Grant Neeley said on Friday. “If I were talking to him, he’d talk about the economic status in Texas.”
Rival Republican former governors Jeb Bush and Mike Huckabee will also try to make the same claim, Neeley said.
On Thursday, Perry, a former Texas governor, announced he was a candidate for the Republican nomination for the president of the United States.
Southern Methodist University Political Science Professor Cal Jillson said in addition to the economy, Perry would also focus on foreign policy.
“He has spent the last couple of years studying up on foreign policy to be a more well-rounded candidate,” Jillson said. “It’s smart for Perry to try and create some credentials on foreign policy. It’s not wise to lead or depend on [them] as he did yesterday.”
However, Jillson cautioned that it was “a flight of fancy” to think that Perry could win the Republican nomination because of lingering negative perceptions of him from his failed 2012 campaign.
Also, Jillson said, the former Texas governor faced far more qualified candidates than himself in the current race.
Perry served as the governor of Texas from December 21, 2000 to January 20, 2015, longer than any other governor in the state.
