MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Munich Security Conference’s "Core Group" of 60 senior decision-makers from across the world will gather in the Austrian capital, Vienna, on Tuesday to discuss challenges to European security east of the EU border.
Speaking ahead of the Core Group Meeting, its chairman, German diplomatic veteran Wolfgang Ischinger, said, "The Ukraine Crisis has clearly demonstrated that Europe’s security architecture is dysfunctional."
Unlike the Bavaria-based Munich Security Conference, the Core Group Meetings have been held in various locations since it first convened in 2009. The group maintains a more low profile to allow participants to have off-the-record discussions on international security policies.
This year, it has invited high-ranking politicians, business executives and civic leaders, as well as a large delegation from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), a partner of the event.
Some of the top-names that are expected to attend the 2015 meeting include the leaders of Estonia and Liechtenstein, senior diplomats from Slovakia, Switzerland, Austria, Ukraine and Russia, a delegation of OSCE representatives, led by its secretary general, the EU commissioner for European integration, as well as two chief executives from Austria-based energy corporations.
