WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Beaches in Brunswick, North Carolina are open to the public despite two shark attacks on Sunday that caused life threatening injuries to two teenagers, local media reported.
“Brunswick County beaches will be open to swimmers Monday, but officials are asking everyone to be cautious,” WBTV reported. “Crews will be on scene monitoring the water, and officials say if a shark is spotted the appropriate course of action will be taken.”
Following the attack, doctors were forced to amputate the girl’s left arm below her elbow, and remove the boy’s left arm below his shoulder.
Oak Island Town Manager Tim Holloman said town officials were working with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s to increase boat patrols along the shoreline, but that the county had no plans to add lifeguards on the beach.
Sunday’s incident comes after a 13-year-old was also injured by a shark attack on Thursday in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.
