NEW YORK (Sputnik) — The two convicted murderers who escaped from a maximum security prison in Dannemora, New York were added to the list of 15 most wanted fugitives, US Marshals Service Director Stacia Hylton said in a statement on Friday.
“The agency’s 15 Most Wanted Fugitive list is reserved for the worst of the worst,” Hylton said. “There is no question [the two escaped convicts] fall into this category.”
On June 6, 2015, New York State Police launched a manhunt for Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 34, after the authorities at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York discovered the two convicts were missing.
Matt was serving a sentence of 25 years for kidnapping a man and beating him to death, while Sweat was convicted of first degree murder of a sheriff's deputy and was serving a life sentence without parole.
One of the duties of the US Marshals Service, the oldest US law enforcement agency, is to apprehend federal fugitives.
