The second escapee from New York's Clinton Correctional facility, David Sweat, has reportedly been surrounded by police in the woods of upstate New York. Earlier in the day, law enforcement officials confirmed that Richard Matt was shot and killed by border patrol officers.

Matt was killed on Friday in a "burst of gunfire," the New York Times reported, and a federal law enforcement official later confirmed he was shot by a border patrol tactical team.

The escapee, who was facing a life sentence for kidnapping, torturing, killing and then dismembering his elderly former boss, was located deep in the woods of upstate New York on Friday afternoon, after his DNA was found in a cabin in Malone, approximately 10 miles away from the shooting site and 10 miles south of the Canadian border.

David Sweat is still on the run, but law enforcement say they have him cornered in the woods near Lake Titus, which is about 50 miles west of the Dannemore prison area. There have been reports of gunfire heard in the area.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that authorities believed that the duo may have been heading to Canada.

Sweat was serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for killing a sheriff’s deputy, and Matt was doing 25 to life.

The men were aided in their escape by prison worker Joyce Mitchell, who has confessed to providing them with necessary tools as well as use of her cellphone.

The state of New York was offering a reward of $50,000 each for information leading to the capture of either or both men.  US Marshals also offered a reward of $25,000 each.  The men had also been added to the list of the US’ top 15 most wanted fugitives.

Over 1,100 federal, state, and local law enforcement officers have been looking for them in the weeks since their escape on June 6.
