TOKYO (Sputnik) – The death toll from the MERS outbreak, which started in South Korea in May, stands at 31, according to the ministry.
As of Saturday data, 2,467 people still remain in isolation.
MERS was first reported in 2012 in Saudi Arabia and then spread to other countries. The viral respiratory disease is introduced from camels to people, with limited human-to-human transmission, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
People with chronic illnesses or a weak immune system are at a higher risk of contracting MERS.
Several vaccines and treatments for MERS are currently in development, but they are still subject to clinical trials.
