NEW DELHI (Sputnik) — The Indian Home Ministry is holding a high level meeting on security in the country’s northeastern states, a source in the ministry told Sputnik Monday.
Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar are reviewing current security in the northeastern states in light of recent insurgent activity, the source said.
Earlier in June, the Indian Army crossed the border into Myanmar and killed some 115 insurgents from India’s northeastern state of Manipur. The militants had fled to the neighboring country after previously killing at least 18 Indian soldiers.
Last week, Singh chaired a meeting on the Myanmar operation and its impact on the border areas.
Northeastern India is home to dozens of separatist groups. Indian troops have been deployed in the area for security but have never conducted operations across the border prior to the June incident.
