“Greece is a part of the eurozone. There’s no doubt about that. Whether with the euro or temporarily without, this question can only be answered by the Greeks themselves,” Sсhauble said as quoted by The Telegraph.
Answering the question about conclusions that can be drawn from the Greek crisis, Schauble said that the community can only function if all the members follow the set rules.
On Sunday, Greece will hold a referendum, asking its citizens whether to accept the international creditors’ austerity demands in exchange for further financial assistance.
Greece’s overall state debt is estimated at about $350 billion, of which $270 billion is owed to the European Central Bank (ECB), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and eurozone countries.
Athens’ last week failure to repay part of its debt to the IMF on time triggered speculation that the country’s default and exit from the eurozone are looming.
