Police arrived at Omni hotel at 700 San Jacinto Boulevard after an emergency dispatcher received a 911 call that reported a man was "walking around with a gun" who had shot someone.

After police rushed to the crime scene, they encountered a man in his 30s carrying a rifle and a dead body on the ground. According to the police, the officers chased the suspect, exchanging gunfire. The man reportedly fired several shots inside the hotel, some of those at police. One of the officers then shot and killed the suspect.

"When the officers arrived on scene, they did engage in gunfire with the suspect," Assistant police Chief Brian Manley said in a press conference downtown Sunday morning.

"The suspect ran into the hotel and the officers gave chase into the hotel. Ultimately encountering the suspect off to the side near the restaurant, where they again engaged in gunfire."

The officer involved in this case, a five-year veteran of the police force, will be placed on administrative duty during the investigation, KXAN News reported.

There is no evidence the gunman knew the victim who was fatally shot in the lobby, according to the police.
