Officer George Bermudez of the Georgetown Police Department was caught tripping a male student, attempting to trip a female student and pushing two other female students as they rushed onto the field following their win.
The officer was suspended without pay for 40 days in June, but was on paid suspension from April 22 until early June when his punishment was decided.
“There is no doubt in my mind that your actions were excessive, unwarranted and executed with extremely poor judgment given the circumstances,” Georgetown Police Chief Wayne Nero stated in his report prior to Bermudez’ initial suspension. “There was no riot. There was no fight. There was a celebration.”
The report concluded that Bermudez had used excessive force and failed to follow department policy by not filing a use of force report.
The city ultimately settled with Bermudez in January, reducing his suspension from 40 to 20 days, the Statesman reported.
On Friday, the department announced that following their internal investigation into the incident, they have decided to again suspend the officer “indefinitely.”
