At least two arrests reportedly have been made at white supremacist rallies in the southeast US state of South Carolina.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – At least two arrests have been made at white supremacist rallies in the southeast US state of South Carolina, local media reported.

Two people have been taken away by police Saturday as scuffles broke out between Ku Klux Klan members and their opponents outside the South Carolina State House in the city of Columbia, according to local ABC affiliate WYFF4.

The rally took place a week after the removal of the Confederate flag from the state Capitol grounds upon Governor Nikki Haley signing the bill authorizing it.

South Carolina Church Shooter Roof to Appear in US Court Thursday
An estimated 50 members of the North Carolina-based Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan shouted slurs at a black unity rally convened earlier on the Capitol steps, separated by heavy police presence.

Opposition to the Confederate flag has grown exponentially following last month’s deadly shooting at a historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina. The suspected gunman, Dylann Roof, was a self-professed white supremacist whose photographs brandishing the flag surfaced in the wake of the attack.

The Confederate flag, a symbol of post-Civil War Southern culture, has come to represent racism for a significant portion of US society as an outdated icon of the country’s slave owning past.
