Tourism would be a good sector for Russia to invest in Tunisia, according to Tunisian Ambassador to Russia Ali Gutali.

MOSCOW (Sputnik), Svetlana Alexandrova — Tunisia is willing to attract Russian investment in its tourism industry, Tunisian Ambassador to Russia Ali Goutali told Sputnik.

"We also would like to see investors from Russia coming and investing in our tourism industry. Tunisia has become a major destination for Russian tourists. We would like to invite Russian businessmen to invest in our tourism industry," Goutali said.

The ambassador said tourism would be a good sector for Russia to invest in, as Tunisia has all that it takes to become a major tourist destination for Russians.

Gutali underscored that between 2011 and 2013, the number of Russian tourists visiting the country doubled, shooting up from 150,000 to 300,000, which is "a breakthrough in this area."

Earlier in the year, Tunisia was shaken by two deadly shootings – at the Tunis Bardo National Museum in March and at a resort in the town of Sousse in June. The two attacks, committed by Islamists, together killed about 60 civilians, mostly foreign tourists.

In March, Economy and Finance Minister Slim Chaker said the country’s tourism industry could lose more than $700 million because of the Bardo attack. Following the Sousse massacre, the United Kingdom, Denmark and Ireland asked their citizens to avoid travelling to the North African country.

After the June attack, Interior Minister Mohammed Najim Gharsalli said the country planned to arm tourist police.
