MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Greece has commenced the process to repay 6.25 billion euro ($6.8 billion) to the European Central Bank (ECB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), a local news agency reported Monday.
The lion's share of the payment, 4.2 billion euro, is to be made to the ECB, while 2.05 billion euro are designated for the IMF, according to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (AMNA).
Athens will also repay a 500 million euro loan to the Greek central bank, local media outlet added.
The payments come after the European Commission offered a short-term bridge loan worth at least 7 billion euro ($7.6 billion) to assist Greece last week.
Greece defaulted on a $1.7-billion loan payment to the IMF in late June, sparking renewed speculation about the country's potential exit from the eurozone.
