ROME (Sputnik) — According to information posted online, Fiumicino, Italy's largest transport hub, as of 3:30 p.m. local time (13:30 GMT), had 32 flights departing from Rome and 25 flights arriving at Fiumicino canceled due to the strike.
Most of the canceled flights were in-country, with a handful connecting to European cities.
The 24-hour nationwide strike was announced earlier in the day by the Italian Civil Aviation Association (ANPAC).
According to the ANPAC's statement, the strike is a result of Alitalia's refusal to provide guarantees for staffing levels, meaning about one thousand pilot and flight attendant jobs are potentially at risk.
Between 15 to 20 percent of scheduled short- and medium-distance flights are expected to be canceled before the end of the strike at 00:00 local time (22:00 GMT).
