WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The number of homicides in Baltimore, Maryland has risen to more than 40 in July, making it one of the deadliest months in half a century, according to local media reports.
“July has seen over 40 homicides so far, making it the second month in 2015 that homicides in Baltimore city have risen above 40,” The Baltimore Sun reported based off of homicide data it compiled.
Out of the 41 homicides committed in July, nearly 90 percent were a result of shootings.
The latest data comes nearly three months after a wave of riots erupted in Baltimore following the burial of 25-year-old Freddie Gray, who died of spinal injuries he received while in police custody.
The events prompted Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake to fire Police Commissioner Anthony Batts amid the city’s spiking homicide rates even after Gray’s death.
