PARIS (Sputnik) — More than 1,000 attempts were made by undocumented immigrants to enter the Eurotunnel overnight, with 30 detained, French media reported Friday, citing police sources.
"More than a thousand attempts to enter the tunnel were prevented overnight, about 30 people are detained," the police said as cited by the French Parisien newspaper.
On Thursday night, 300 people were stopped in the Eurotunnel, according to the police.
Law enforcement sources have documented about 5,000 attempts by migrants to cross the English Channel for the United Kingdom since the beginning of the week, according to media estimates. Several people have died trying to enter the country.
On Wednesday, UK Home Secretary Theresa May said the UK government will take urgent measures to stop undocumented immigrants from illegally crossing from France through the tunnel.
Earlier on Friday, UK Prime Minister David Cameron said Britain would contribute additional resources, including the construction of fences and sniffer dogs, to help France deal with migrants in its northern ports trying to cross into England.
