MOSCOW(Sputnik), Daria Chernyshova — The migration crisis in the French port of Calais is a manifestation of the flawed migration policy of the European Union, a French lawmaker told Sputnik on Friday.
"Calais is simply a manifestation of the fact that the EU migration policy is replete with faults," Thierry Mariani said.
According to Mariani, the entire European Union is to blame for the acute migrant crisis that the bloc is experiencing.
"The responsibility for the migration crisis lies on France and on all the other EU countries," Mariani said.
In recent weeks, Calais has seen repeated attempts by hundreds of undocumented migrants to cross over into the United Kingdom, causing traffic disruptions in the Channel Tunnel. This week alone, some 3,500 people are estimated to have tried to enter the tunnel on passing trucks and trains headed for Britain.
Although French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve and UK Home Secretary Theresa May agreed to cooperate on the issue of undocumented migrants in Calais back in June, the issue remains unsolved.
