Armed forces loyal to the Yemeni internationally recognized President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi plan to launch an offensive to retake the Houthi-controlled capital Sanaa within two weeks, a senior Yemeni military commander Abdullah Subaihi said Saturday.

MANAMA (Sputnik) — Under the plan, two separate units totaling some 2,000 ground forces along with the Saudi-led coalition's warplanes will liberate the cities of Taiz and Marib before heading to the capital.

"Forces loyal to political legitimacy [pro-Hadi] have laid down a strategy, in coordination with the [Saudi-led] coalition [targeting the Houthis in Yemen], which will come into effect in the coming days. The plan comprises liberating a large part of the territory currently under the control of the putschists," Subaihi said as quoted by the pan-Arab Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper.

Exiled Yemeni Vice President Returns to Liberated Aden
Yemen has been in a state of civil war since 2014, when Houthi militants, the country’s primary opposition party, took control over large parts of the country, forcing Hadi to flee to Saudi Arabia.

In late July, Yemeni Prime Minister Khaled Bahah declared Aden, the second largest city in the country, liberated from Houthi rebels.

Since late March, the Saudi-led coalition of Arab states has been launching airstrikes against Houthi positions in Yemen at the request of the Yemeni president-in-exile.

The conflict in Yemen has claimed the lives of at least 1,900 civilians and more than 4,000 have suffered injuries, according to the United Nations.
