MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The migrant crisis in the French port of Calais will result in grave consequences for Belgium's transport industry, a representative for TLV, the Belgian association of transportation companies, said Sunday.
In recent weeks, Calais has seen repeated attempts by thousands of undocumented migrants to cross over into the United Kingdom, causing traffic disruptions in the Channel Tunnel.
The TLV representative also added that there was a problem of sanitary protecting goods. According to Verkinderen, migrants have tried to enter the tunnel on passing trucks and if they managed to get inside the trucks carrying food, the goods would not be delivered to customers under the sanitary standards.
Several Belgian transport companies would put on hold sending trucks to the United Kingdom, Verkinderen said.
The French side of the Channel Tunnel, Calais is currently home to some 3,000 migrants from conflict-torn countries in North Africa, the Middle East, and Central and South Asia living in tents near the transit zone.
